|Overview Of General Motors South Africa|
GENERAL MOTORS SOUTH AFRICA is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Company. In 2007 the automotive industry in South Africa sold a volume of 612 707 vehicles. South Africa is GM’s largest market in Africa and the second largest in the regions of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. A stable economic and political climate makes this country the perfect platform for GM to grow on the African continent.
Between 2003 and 2006 the company has doubled its sales. In 2005, General Motors awarded a contract to GMSA to assemble and export the new Hummer H3 to left hand drive markets in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. With the company’s head office and two hi-tech manufacturing plants based in Port Elizabeth, this export contract brought the Eastern Cape considerable investment in facilities and products. In 2007 production of the right hand drive H3 commenced for local consumption and for export to the right-hand drive countries. Both left and right hand drive HUMMER H3’s now run on the same line.
As one of the largest private sector employers in Port Elizabeth, GMSA plays the role of economic anchor to the city, providing employment for a workforce of about 3 500 people. The company’s Sales and Marketing office is based in Johannesburg and has regional offices in Cape Town and Durban. It has two dealer network franchises encompassing 156 dealerships across the country and in Southern Africa. In addition, approximately 1200 direct and indirect suppliers make up the company’s supplier base.
GMSA markets the brands of Chevrolet, Opel, Isuzu and the premium brands HUMMER SAAB and Cadillac. Ideally located in Port Elizabeth, the company is easily able to transport its vehicles and components to the largest regional economy—Gauteng—by road, air or rail. The city’s location midway between the ports of Cape Town to the southwest and Durban to the northeast, enables GMSA to execute logistical operations to export markets. In addition to vehicle exports, the company also initiated the export of catalytic converters in its hometown and continues to be a leading exporter of high quality automotive components.
GMSA operates using the General Motors’ common Global Manufacturing System (GMS), which is centred on people and leverages the best practices of all global operations. The company has the benefits of GM’s global design, engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, sales and capital investment resources. With the commitment to providing only the very best in quality and service to its customers, General Motors South Africa continues to increase its market share in the country steadily.
